ELIM
The Elim Pentecostal movement
Elim Oasis Church is part of the Elim Pentecostal Church – a growing movement of churches across the UK and beyond.
Elim began in 1915, founded by George Jeffreys and a group of passionate men and women who were experiencing what they believed to be a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Their focus wasn’t on starting a new denomination, but on sharing the gospel through evangelistic campaigns in towns and cities.
However, as people responded to this message, many found they weren’t welcomed in traditional churches. In response, the first Elim church was opened in 1916 in Belfast – in a converted laundry building.
By 1920, Elim had grown to include 15 churches across Ireland and 21 recognised ministers. The movement continued to expand as independent Pentecostal churches in places like Dowlais (Wales) and Vazon (Guernsey) joined the Elim family.
In 1924, the first Elim Bible School was opened in Clapham to train men and women for ministry. A publishing house, a correspondence course for church workers, and an overseas missions department were also launched around this time – sending missionaries around the world with the gospel message.
From those early days to today, Elim has continued to grow, with churches being planted across the UK and internationally. What started as a move of the Spirit through a few faithful pioneers has become a movement impacting thousands of lives with the presence and power of God.
The story is still being written.
